Luna 2 Shot Edition

Release Date: January 10, 2020
Manufacturer:
Banpresto/Bandai Spirits
Series: Girls Memories; 2 Shot
Height: 25 cm (9.843″)
MFC: Link

This plush was very difficult to track down information for. A lot of sales post incorrectly label the series as “2nd” Shot, but it’s actually “2 Shot.” This year has actually dragged on for so long I thought maybe she released several years ago and was shocked when I went onto the Girls Memories site to find that she only released in January.

There is a matching Artemis to Luna, but I have not yet purchased him. My Luna came from a Facebook Marketplace post for a price that was impossible to pass up, so Artemis will have to join her another day.

Advertising

I currently do not own any advertising for this line. Below are official images released for the plushies.

Packaging

I’m fairly certain this plush might have come wrapped in the plastic bag, but that the sticker is from Toreba and their online claw game website. On the Girls Memories website she is mentioned as being for sale there.

Posing

Lunas pose is not much different from most any plushies released in the 20th-25th Anniversary merchandise. It’s just a simple sitting pose. Because of how similar most of these plushies have been I haven’t been very interested in purchasing them, and I mostly snagged this one for the good deal. But she sits nicely on her own, and I like that her tail is sewn to sit to her side, and is not just straight. The curve makes her a little more interesting.

Embroidery, Accessories, & Stitching

Luna’s details are quite high quality. Her stitching is very strong, embroidery is VERY clean, and, unlike 90’s plushies, the details are sewn on instead of hot glued. I expect Luna will hold up for years with simple display, but will also be durable for a child to cuddle.

Tags

The hanging tag for this series is quite cute with artwork that looks almost water coloured, but might be digital air brushing instead. If I’m not mistaken, I think I’ve seen that line art brush used by artists who use Procreate.

Overall

Prize plushies are so different from the ones I am use to buying from the Sailor Moon franchise, or even seeing in North American crane machines. It’s a great different though, because the quality is ridiculously higher.

While for overall quality I highly recommend this Luna Plush, I suggest you look up the different variations. There are plenty of releases that look similar to her, and have a darker fur, or blue eyes. While she’s cute, the only thing vastly original about this release is her neck decoration of a flower and ribbon. Other releases include a pink ribbon, or a variety of ribbons, so if you just want one, there are plenty. If you are a completionist… uh… good luck distinguishing them all when you’re trying to remember what you own.

Sailor Moon R ADV DVD Set

Release Year: 2003
Specifications: ADV Films; 945 Minutes; Region 1. Contains uncut Japanese version with English subtitles. NO English language version.
Release: Canada/USA
Status: Official
Paid: Gift

Like the Classic set, this set was released as the ultimate Sailor Moon Season 2 box set for the die hard anime fan in North America. It was released with the episodes uncut, with Japanese language only, and definitely less likely to appeal to fans who grew up with the DIC dub. Oddly, it’s also missing an episode, very sneakily hidden between the numbers on the ends of the box set.

Admittedly this post will parrot most of what I had to say about the season 1 set, but bear with me.

Advertising

I don’t own any advertising for this set to my knowledge. I was only about 14 when it released, and I haven’t seen much more than some DVD advertisements in NewType magazine.

Packaging

Box

The packaging on this set is ICONIC. It features Japanese logos, high quality art, beautiful foil silhouettes of Sailor Moon and the Cutie Moon Rod, and matches the dark blue box merchandise also released in North America, but in a purple complimentary tone to the blue of season 1. Every single piece of the set is well thought out and clearly designed by a fan who understood the aesthetic. ADV put love into this packaging and it shows.

Like the season 1 box set, the bottom of the season 2 set has a foil Cutie Moon Rod that I absolutely love.

DVD Cases and DVDs

The DVD cases feature cute high quality art of Sailor Moon, Chibi Usa, Black Lady, and Neo Queen Serenity. The backs feature screen shots from each episode, and adorable character art of Usagi in her pajamas, and Chibi art of Sailor Pluto.

Notice how episode 67 is missing from the numbers between the sets. 47-66 and then 68-89.

The inside of the case is standard for a DVD set with multiple disks. It has a location for each disk, 4 disks per set, and an episode guide for each holder.

Ironically, this time I remembered to fix the DVD’s… but there’s no character print on them to show off.

The episode guides features art of Moonlight Night, and Sailor Pluto

Audio and Video

This set does NOT include the 90’s Dub.

Like season 1… that’s where the good ends. The audio and video on this set are comparable to old VHS. The only plus side to it is actually owning the entire first series unedited, uncut, and in Japanese with subtitles. I’ve included some unedited screenshots.

Episode 67

The infamous episode 67 isn’t just missing by accident on the text on the side of the box. It’s literally just missing from the entire box set. Conveniently, that is smack dab in the middle of the season, so it would have been just an easy typo, but unfortunately, that is not the case.

It was also missing from the 90’s Sailor Moon dub.

Turns out it seems TOEI and Naoko Takeuchi would not let the episode come to North America. The running theory on the internet and in some second-hand word from ADV is that the episode was deemed too much for the American market.

You can read a pretty great recap of the episode on MoonKitty where they also talk about this issue.

Bootlegs

Bootlegs DO exist of this set, but at the time of writing this, they appear without the box, with the complete season in one of the DVD cases above.

Bootleg sets will likely not be region 1 and may contain other languages other than Japanese and English. If it includes Chinese it is definitely a bootleg copy.

Conclusion

As per season 1, I recommend this set for the completionist, or the fan who just wants to own the complete series in Japanese (minus episode 67). I do not recommend it for fans who are looking for high-quality releases. While the box set IS beautiful and a great shelf piece, the quality of the actual content is less than ideal. This is not a good set for someone looking to casually watch the series. Especially given how expensive it can be.

Sailor Moon Classic ADV DVD Set

Release Year: 2003
Specifications: ADV Films; 1060 Minutes; Region 1. Contains uncut Japanese version with English subtitles. NO English dub settings.
Release: Canada/USA
Status: Official
Paid: Gift

This Sailor Moon DVD set was actually a gift I received when I was about 18. I remember looking at another copy longingly in a comic shop display case, but at $150 CAD it was much more money than I had as a teen.

This set was released as the ultimate Sailor Moon Season 1 box set for the die hard anime fan in North America. It was released with the episodes uncut, with Japanese language only, and definitely less likely to appeal to fans who grew up with the DIC dub.

Packaging

Box

The packaging on this set is ICONIC. It features Japanese logos, high quality art, beautiful foil silhouettes of Sailor Moon and the Moon Wand, and matches the dark blue box merchandise also released in North America. Every single piece of the set is well thought out and clearly designed by a fan who understood the aesthetic. ADV put love into this packaging and it shows.

My favourite detail on the box set is the foil Crescent Moon Wand on the bottom of the box with the technical specifications. It’s a detail that didn’t need to be there, didn’t need to be foil, and yet they still went for it.

DVD Cases and DVDs

The DVD cases feature cute high quality art of Sailor Moon, Luna, and Artemis. The backs feature screen shots from each episode, and adorable character art of Usagi’s bed spread bunny, and the kitten that chews on Luna’s tail in the episode “Loved and Chased: Luna’s Worst Day Ever.”

The inside of the case is standard for a DVD set with multiple disks. It has a location for each disk, 4 disks per set, and an episode guide for each holder.

I apologize to those of you who are irritated that the DVD’s are not adjusted in the pictures. I completely glossed over the pictures printed onto the disks and didn’t think to straighten them up. The good news is you can see them really well, and they look wonderful on the disks.

The episode guides feature vectored line art of the Senshi and descriptions of each episode.

Audio and Video

This set does NOT include the 90’s Dub.

I’m going to be really honest… that’s where the good ends. The audio and video on this set is comparable to old VHS. The only plus side to it is actually owning the entire first series unedited, uncut, and in Japanese with subtitles. I’ve included some unedited screenshots

The subtitles are honestly horrible. The translation I can’t speak for as it has been a while since I watched the full set, but the size and quality of the text is distracting and covers up a lot of the screen.

THAT SAID, this set released in the beginning of DVD’s being available at a reasonable price tag for home viewing. We weren’t seeing the kind of releases we are today just yet.

I haven’t compared this release to the others yet, but maybe that will be another article?

Bootlegs

Bootlegs DO exist of this set, but at the time of writing this they appear without the box, with the complete season in one of the DVD cases above.

Bootleg sets will likely not be region 1 and may contain other languages other than Japanese and English. If it includes Chinese it is definitely a bootleg copy.

It depends on why you want the set. I love owning it, it looks amazing on my shelf, but I absolutely have not watched it in years.

Tamashii Buddies Sailor Moon Figures – Inner Senshi

Image1

Japanese release date: April 2015
International release date: May 2015

Website: http://sailormoon.tamashii.jp/

“Tamashii Buddies” is a new line of figures from Bandai that are meant to be affordable. Consider them a “Pop” figure from Japan. They’ll range around $10-$15, come in generic packaging, come in a generic pose that matches the rest of the character line, and come with a character/series appropriate background.

The cool part about this figure line is that they’re the first line (that I know of) that come with a stacking feature (photos below). This makes them unique, and a great option for the collector without a lot of space.

Due to the generic nature of this line I’ll be featuring these figures in 2 posts. The first (this one) will feature the Inner Senshi and be updated as they release. The second will feature the Outer Senshi as they are released (as of April 2015 they have not even been announced). Subscribe to my blog to receive a notification when that happens!

Packaging

IMG_4005

The packaging for this line is extremely generic. In fact, the other series featured in this line, Dragonball Z, has essentially the exact same packaging in a different colour. Anything to keep costs down! This is reminisent of the Funko Pop! figure line in North America.

The left features the name of the character and series, the top right features the figure number in the line (Venus 006, Moon 005), the bottom features the figure line logo, series logo, and license holders logo’s, including the TOEI sticker seen on almost every piece of Sailor Moon merchandise out there.

Here’s a closer look at that information:

Parts, Assembly, and Fit

Each figure comes with a background, 4 posts, and a “top”. The characters are firmly attached to the base in such a way that I didn’t want to try too hard to remove one of them, as I felt like it might not go back on without glue.

IMG_4017 IMG_4025

Pay attention to which way you insert your posts to build your frame as there IS a top and a bottom. The top has the peg on the inside of the post, the bottom has the peg on the outside of the post (inside being where the background is held.

IMG_4018 IMG_4020

Build your frame, and THEN slide the background card into it from the bottom.

IMG_4021

Insert the bottom pegs into the back of the base.

IMG_4022

To make them stackable insert the extra posts on the front of the base of the figure you wish to be on the bottom of your display, and remove the top piece on the back of the display. Place the top figure on the posts, and insert the pegs into the holes on the bottom of the top figures base.

You may also add left over posts (and the now extra top) to the top figure for a frame effect similar to the bottom figure, but it isn’t required.

IMG_4032

Sculpting and Posing

As this line is meant to be relatively well priced for the casual collector don’t expect a lot of greatness and variety out of this line, and especially not this series. As this is only number 5 and 6 out of a brand new line by an experienced company the sculpting is not bad, but it’s definitely not up there with their more expensive figures, reasonably so.

The pose is still an appropriate one for the series, the faces are cute, and actually… the hair and bows are REALLY cute. Sailor Moon’s twin tails are probably one of my favourite versions of them out of what we’ve seen in the 20th Anniversary figures in general. They’re what I’d expect to see on her chibi-fied figure.

My only issue with these is that their proportions are a little wonky. They’re JUST in that grey area of “Well, are they chibi? Or are they poorly sculpted non-scales?” Technically I think the Tamashii Buddies line was shooting for “Super Deformed” (which is an actual term in regards to the proportions used), but I’ve always felt awkwardly about that style. It never quite has the right level of “deformed” to reach the level of cute I feel they’re striving for

IMG_4027 IMG_4028 IMG_4029 IMG_4030

I love the details put into their backs despite most display set-ups probably never allowing you to properly see them.

IMG_4037 IMG_4038

Painting

As with most “affordable” figures the painting DOES come with a few defects, though definitely not the way most do. I’m actually quite impressed with the paint job done on these figures, though the eyes, and Sailor Moons brooch are decals… that’s not a draw back at all for me as they look great.

IMG_4033

I was rather sad to discover a paint chip on the boot of Sailor Moon. It’s REALLY noticeable.

IMG_4034 IMG_4035 IMG_4036

Base

The base itself is rather basic in pattern, with just a brick/tile pattern, but the base as a functioning part of the figure is WONDERFUL!

IMG_4036

Not only does it display a wonderful background

IMG_4027

But it helps collectors with limited space CREATE space.

IMG_4032So while it’s incredibly basic, it’s also incredibly useful, and if I scored things in my reviews I’d give it a 15/10, because basically all Sailor Moon collectors are crying over space issues right now. This isn’t limited to the Sailor Moon series either! This is a feature of the ENTIRE Tamashii Buddies line that’s compatible all the way through. So you can also stack these with the Dragonball Z figures.

Identify Bootlegs

As of April 2015 there are no bootlegs of this series. Please comment if you think you’ve found some!

Overall

I think the only thing I’m disappointed in is that I’m NOT disappointed. I was really hoping I wouldn’t want to collect these just so I could keep SOMETHING off of my wishlist! XD. These are ADORABLE and super well done for a $15 value, AND if you’re creative it’s SUPER easy to make custom backgrounds by printing out backgrounds on some cardstock. The backgrounds measure 5 1/8″ tall x 2 5/8″ wide btw 😉

Basically if you’re broke and want some Sailor Moon figures but can’t afford the $80+ FiguartsZERO line I HIGHLY recommend these figures for your collection.

Mini Plush Cushion Set 1

header

Japanese release date: December 2013
Manufacturer: Bandai

Line: Sailor Moon Mini Cushion
MyFigureCollection

These plushies were one of the first of the 20th Anniversary celebrations! They’re vastly different than the plush of the 90’s, but without doubt still managed to be some of the cutest plushies out there.

Advertising

I do not currently own any advertising for this product.

Packaging

These plush come loose individually, as well as in a box set. While the individual plush averaged about $10 each, the box set, in places that were selling it for suggested retail, sold for about $40, so slightly discounted. There are no differences between the BOXED plush, and the LOOSE plush though.

Paulichu1385607797

Posing

The plush are made so that they sit. The bottoms are stuffed with beans, the bottoms sewn so that they’re flat, and the legs so that they stick out on the front. For the most part they sit just fine, but I’ve found my Jupiter and Venus have issues balancing. This could be because of Jupiter’s stuffed hair, and Venus’ hair bow.

IMG_1609

Embroidery, Accessories, & Stitching

The plushies seem relatively strong and high quality. I wouldn’t expect many pieces to fall off of these because of old glue or wear. Most things appear to be stitched on. The only pieces that appear to be glued are the earrings, which are also a fabric or paper.

Everything is done extremely clean on these plushies, from the embroidery in their eyes, to how each piece has been stitched on as part of the plush. It seems most of these are put together as a PLUSH, instead of a body with clothing on it like some of the earlier pieces from the 90’s (some important pieces had been glued on).

The gems on their bows are just plastic rhinestones, but are a nice touch compared to the normal fabric or paper materials. The stripes, which in the past were normally stitched on, are printed and solid. Unfortunately the tiara gem gets ignored and appears to be printed into the fabric tiara. The same goes for Sailor Moons hair bun pieces, which appear to be some sort of thick card stock.

Tags

The tags for this set are probably among my favourite for any plush series I’ve owned yet. Each tag has the character on the front, and a profile in Japanese on the inside. It also has the TOEI tag on the back, instead of on the tush tag. Copyright information and warnings can also be found printed on the inside left flap, and back. They’re attacked to the top of each Senshi’s head.

Tush Tags

The tush tags are located on the back butts of the plushies (hence, tush). On the top they’re printed with the corresponding Senshi’s symbol, and on the bottom is their plushie number (392 – 398), the month/year they were released (Lies! They were delayed and released in Dec, not Nov as scheduled),  and where they were made (China).

Overall

These plushies are very nice. They’re cute, well made, reasonably priced at 800 – 1200 yen average retail, and are small enough to keep on a shelf, or display case. The fabrics feature lots of wonderful textures that do not hinder their appearances, and displayed these plush look ADORABLE.

Recommended for Plushie, and general collectors. If plush don’t normally tickle your fancy they will just be plush. There’s nothing to make them particularly special compared to most plushies beyond being a part of the Sailor Moon anniversary. Compared to the typical plushies Sailor Moon received from Banpresto claw machines in the past though, these are a huge step up in quality.
